GEOS-5 Aerosol Observations (AeroObs)

Locations and collections of data we are acquiring for aerosol simulation validation and aerosol assimilation.

Data Philosophy

For satellite data sets we are acquiring the Level 2 products, which are nominally the official aerosol retrieval products at their highest available resolution.

A subset of the contents of the Level 2 collections is stored in the so-called "ODS" files, which are netcdf readable files containing a single entry for every observation (so think of them as big tables of time/location/wavelength/.../value of each observation).

For satellite data sets we may as well provide Level 3 products, which are gridded to some (or maybe) several GEOS-5 model specific horizontal grids. These files are produced from the ODS files.

Satellite Data Sets

MODIS

Two MODIS aerosol products are acquired: MODIS Terra (MOD04, 2000 - present) and MODIS Aqua (MYD04, 2002 - present). Currently we have acquired data in Collection 5 (MOD04) and Collection 5.1 (MYD04).

MOD04: Available 20000224 - 20100414 newcalculon:/nobackup/3/MODIS/Level2/MOD04/ODS (Collection-5 discontinued.)
MYD04: Available 20020704 - 20100516 newcalculon:/nobackup/3/MODIS/Level2/MYD04/ODS (Collection-5.1)

We will shortly begin accumulating the Collection 5.1 of MOD04. Data are typically available within a couple of days of collection.

MISR

We are acquiring the MISR aerosol product (algorithm rev. F12_0022).

MISR: Available 20010101 - 20100228 newcalculon:/nobackup/3/MISR/Level2/ODS

MISR has a slower processing stream. We acquire new data approximately 2 - 3 months after collection.

PARASOL

PARASOL: Available 20050303 - 20100514 newcalculon:/nobackup/3/PARASOL/Level2/ODS

OMI

OMI: Available 20041001 - 20100516 newcalculon:/nobackup/3/OMI/Level2/ODS
