MERRA2 Preparations

This is a page to keep tabs on MERRA2 tasks that need to be performed.

Files to be updated

    • airs/mhs .blk suffix & consistency w/ obsys.rc

    • TMI rainrate bufr: separate ocean/land sources or combined file?
    • SSMI rain rates - unsure if we assimilated all SSMI's in MERRA
    • Ensure prepbufr configured correctly
    • Needs file structure for AVHRR winds - will need to be consistent w/ obsys.rc
    • Entries needed for MLS - T & O3?
    • Entry (entries?) needed for TOMS?
    • Not updated for cbkg != NONE

  • Issues/Questions:
    • All changes above w/ GSI_GridComp.rc.tmpl need to be consistent with and probably to this file
    • Reorganized based on Obs type (like GSI_GridComp.rc.tmpl) to ensure dvals/dthins are consistent
    • Ozone not organized - defer to Kris/Larry to tidy this up/make dthin&dvals consistent
    • Still include sndr_g11 & sndr_g12 entries, in case older versions need not be detector-by-detector.
    • Only single entry for GOES-8 & GOES-10, which was switched on in MERRA April 2001. Need to establish if they should have sndrDN-style entry

Observations to be Acquired and/or Processed

• SSMI Radiances v7 (YK processing data-in progress, DM-testing)
• SSMI v7 wind speed (processed YK, tested DM) DONE!
• ERS2 scat. (DM-testing) DONE!
• AVHRR AMVs
  • Issue at hand for recent (post-2010) data stream. Infrastructure developed, but base observations may not actually exist (observations used for development may be from an antiquated algorithm).
    • WM - Awaiting further guidance from D. Santek
    • Will proceed forward - working with Rob to determine best way to acquire data
  • prepbufr (1982-2010) (DM)
• Consolidated prepbufr for 79-97 - ncep2013 (DM)
• GPS - preCOSMIc era ? (DM)
• IASI (2008-now) (DM)
• ASCAT (2008-now) (DM)
• GOES 1x1 (2007-now) (DM)

Issues to address

• Infrastructure to bring in "spun-up" satbias/satbang files. Specific issues: (WM)
  • satbang coefficients & tlapmean values - spin up from scout diags
  • satbias coefficients - substitute in from "spun-up" scout satbias_rst (some delta-time in the future)
